This is a part of a pinion ring bearing thingie from the rear end of a Ford SUV. How quickly does it get to this point? It was making a noise and the owner wants me to find out (he bought the vehicle three months ago) if it was a problem that occurred before or after he bought the car.

It doesn’t take long for a bearing to go bad. And chances are its the original bearing, and 220000 miles is a long time for a bearing. Chances are they never changed the gear oil.
That bearing owes ya nothing.

Tapered roller bearing that took a shit. Probably the original, and the gear oil may have been too LOL. Cheapo bearings may go bad quick. I’ve beat on Timken and SKF stuff for a while and never had an issue.
FWIW this bearing was on its way out a while ago, BUT it may have just finally failed recently.

Based on what I know of needle bearing race wear (next to nothing), it would look like this kind of pitting and scaring happened over not a short while. Though because its so heavy, it wouldn’t take too much time for it to get rekt if it has contaminants or no grease.

You need an oppo inion on your [o] pinion ?
I don’t think you’ll get any oppo sition to that request.
I’m having too much fun today.
Oppo.

Once you lose the thin hardened layer, it goes bad in a hurry. It could have been cracked or pitted but in a way that is unnoticeable (unless you take it apart and visually inspect), and then just totally ate shit over a few miles.

Is he expecting you to testify about it?

Unless it was out of oil it probably took a while to get to that point. Bearings are tough and will take a long time to go bad, assuming they’re properly lubricated. But all bets are off if the oil was old, bad, or low. Either way, looks like a side effect of high mileage to me. Best case, if the seller is rreeaaalllyyy nice, your friend might be able to get them to split the cost of repair.
